I take my last breath, soften my shoulders and dive down. A sense of calm engulfs my entire body and I immediately know this is going to be a good dive. Tucked chin as I descend deeper, the increasing pressure is welcomed. I reach my depth and I level out only to see mom and calf displaying their unbreakable bond. Absolute silence, completely relaxed and acknowledging this significant moment I pull my camera up and take a photo, even though I know it will never fully encapsulate it.
Mother-calf pairs have the strongest and more lasting bond within humpback whales. The calf will stay with its mother for about a year until it is weaned. During that time, it will feed on a fat rich milk to put on weight very quickly and be able to migrate to the feeding grounds with its mother.
